Watercolour on paper. This self portrait was inspired primarily by Vermeer’s quiet domestic scenes. I also wanted to explore the way in which a self portrait can be a revalatory experience for the viewer, and autobiography for the artist documenting the self through artwork. This piece called: In the Living Room, is quite literally that. All of the contents show what was once there, as naturally some things have changed, in my actual living room and studio. The details of the picture revel different ‘selves’ not only from perspective in terms of reflections – loosely inspired by Picasso’s portraits of his models where many perspectives are shown simultaneously – but by including an old photograph of myself with a dear friend which represents a past self, a self that has grown and changed with time.
